WINDPLAYER stories
A journey to archaic sound and fabric scape.
7 scales, 6 instruments, 3 fabrics, one wind - player,
a live performance of music, movement through the installation
The music miniatures consist of a pre-recorded soundtrack, sometimes layered in rhythmic patterns and strong short musical phrases, and sometimes composed of ostinato sections or melodic repeated phrases, which the instrumentalist will freely improvise on various instruments during the performance. The music will be transformed into movement, undulations and play with hand-painted and natural dye veils, masterfully placed in the performance space. Refractions of light will create an interplay between the visible, the audible and the felt, evoking a spectrum of feelings, perceptions and beauty in the listeners/viewers.
The idea for the project was conceived in 2022 when the artist commissioned a solo piece on the theme of the Gemini for an event. She developed the piece in a Mixolydian mode and structured it as a free musical expression - improvisation and a structured musical thought - improvisation on a pre-recorded score. The audience's positive response inspired her to develop 7 musical miniatures - peeks into the world of different sound performances - over the course of 2023.
Each of the scales - based on the theory and history of modal scales derived from the ancient Greeks' conception of music - brings a unique feeling. The perception and use of modus in ancient Greek culture led the author on a path of exploration of the internal shifts between improvisation and structuring of compositions. The sequences of semitones and whole tones that give a specific colour and feeling to each of the seven scales shock the artist in their archaic beauty. Those specific colours were an inspiration for Marijana K. D. to develop an installation responding to music, making veils from different materials (cotton, kalika, veils), dying them in natural colours. Different miniatures are connected to different colours, materials, lights. Performer walks and plays with veils during live improvisation.
