‘The Inexhaustible Bach’ is a concert of selected works by J. S. Bach, to be performed by the accomplished musicians Renata Bauer and Eva Jurgec. In the opening section of the programme, we shall hear a selection of Bach’s works with religious themes, which make up a large part of his oeuvre; two instrumental movements from Bach’s church cantatas (known as Sinfonias), an instrumental arrangement of the well-known chorale ‘Jesus is my joy’ (also from a church cantata), and an instrumental version of a famous aria from the St Matthew Passion (‘Have mercy on me, Lord’). The pinnacle of Bach’s brilliant compositional skill in chamber music will be the concert’s centrepiece: the Sonata in G minor (originally written for the transverse flute, viola da gamba and harpsichord). This three-movement composition is full of fantastic contrapuntal passages and stylistically distinctive dance elements, and represents the pinnacle of Bach’s inexhaustible creativity and his exceptional compositional and structural mastery. The performers will round off the concert programme with solo pieces – arrangements for their instruments taken from Bach’s solo string repertoire – and conclude with the popular piece ‘Air’ from Bach’s Orchestral Suite in D major.
