SHEKINAH

Psalms for Every Day

‘Shekinah’ is the English transliteration of a Hebrew word meaning ‘dwelling’ or ‘residence’, and refers to God’s presence in a particular place.

The 'Shekinah 'Project – Psalms for Everyday Life – began back in 2023, when three friends came up with the idea of setting selected psalms from the Old Testament to music. Over the next six months, the team was reduced to two friends, Eva (Milošič) and Eva (Jurgec), who began the first phase of the project in the autumn of 2023 – the selection and review of the psalms – whilst at the same time the first musical experiments were already underway. E & E continued their work in the spring of 2024 and again in the spring of 2025 – they added harmonisation, additional voices, structure and musical arc, interpretations of the psalms, and improvised instrumental sections to the melodies. They presented the work at their first public concert on 4 June 2025, in Veli Iž, on the island of Iž, Croatia.

E & E performed the concert at the Olenadra House of the artist Balza, which will shortly be renamed the House of Fine Arts. For the concert, they prepared two celebratory chants featuring an interpretative recitation of Psalms 19 and 40, as well as three set-to-music psalms (partial musical settings of texts from Psalms 4, 38 and 146). At the concert, they also presented three instrumental works composed during this latest phase of their collaboration – May/June 2025 – which are the original compositions of E. Jurgec. They had also prepared texts of the psalms in Croatian and German for the audience – comprising both tourists and local residents. The concert venue was packed with curious visitors, and the concert was filled with subtle beauty. After the event, visitors were treated to some homemade apricot ice cream.

In 2026, the two friends and artists met twice. The first, shorter meeting in May was devoted to creative inspiration, whilst the one-month artistic residency in September was dedicated to revisiting the psalms. They presented their work at a concert on 1 October 2026 at the Cultural Centre.

The project continues with new meetings, musical arrangements and concerts.

The composers hope that the psalm melodies and the psalms themselves will become part of everyday life, and are therefore offering them free of charge for singing and other uses. PDF versions of the sheet music will soon be available right here :)
